Celebration and inspiration

When exploring instagram recently I came upon a few of sites which opened up a beautiful celebration.

These sites show women loving women. Seeing these images brought such pride and inspiration. As a person who, by using grassroots methods, in supporting the legal efforts made by some LGBT pioneers (listed below), I know that they are able to show their love in the ways they are in large part due to the work and efforts I and others took on. No one asked us to. We were motivated with the vision of seeing a gays and lesbians and all minorities feel included, celebrated and vibrant in society.

Seeing the love and the ability to express it on these IG accounts filled me with joy. Our efforts, our vision is showing very different images of being lesbian than those we saw when I first was coming out.

One of the interesting observations is how sexy these women looked Sexy is not the term I would use for what we looked like 25 - 30 years ago. That does not surprise me. We needed to be guarded, to have protective walls up around us. The world was not so safe for us.

What a difference safety makes for people to express themselves in love and in relationships. I celebrate that.

I want to honor some of the people who help bring this change about, the early pioneers. Mary Bonato, Esq. working with Glad. Evan Wolfson founder and president ofĀ Freedom to Marry. Susan Murray and Beth Robinson, attorneys with Langrock, Sperry and Wool and founders of Vermont Freedom to Marry and lead lawyers for the Baker v State of Vermont which opened doors for civil unions and legal recognition of same sex couples to gain all rights and responsibilities of marriage. The first state in the US to do that. Joseph Watson, Deb Lashman who, along with me, served on the VFMTF board and did the ground/grassroots work needed in the earliest days, and the six plaintiffs, Ā Stan Baker and Peter Harrigan, Holly Puterbaugh and Lois Farnham, and Nina Beck and Stacy Jolles.

So here is to all of these people and to all of the people celebrating their love today, posting pictures in a sexy, thriving style. It is inspiring.
